December and Winter Break Umrah: A Guide for Travelers from the USA and Canada

For many families in the United States and Canada, the winter break is the only time everyone is free for two weeks at once. That makes December one of the busiest months for Umrah from North America. This guide explains what to expect in December, how early to book, and how to plan around school holidays, crowds and prices.
Why December is so popular
- School holidays. Children are off school, and many adults take leave between Christmas and New Year.
- Milder weather. December is one of the coolest months in Makkah and Madinah, which makes walking between the hotel and the mosque much easier than in summer.
- Long days off work around public holidays make a 10 to 14-night trip possible without using as much leave.
The downside is that many other travellers have the same idea, so flights and hotels near the Haram fill early and cost more.
Winter break dates in the USA and Canada
There is no single national date. In both countries, school boards and districts set their own calendars:
- United States: most districts close for about one to two weeks around Christmas and New Year, typically from the last week of December into the first days of January.
- Canada: most provinces and school boards give about two weeks off over Christmas and New Year.
Check your children’s school calendar before choosing flights. Even a few days’ difference in the return date can change the price and availability.
Weather in December
In Makkah, average daily highs in December are around 85–88°F (29–31°C), with lows around 62–66°F (17–19°C), and rain is rare (Weather Spark). The midday sun is still strong, so a light umbrella and water are useful. Madinah is noticeably cooler, especially in the early morning and at night, so pack a light jacket or sweater for Fajr.
Crowds and planning around them
- The second half of December and the first days of January are usually the busiest period, because they overlap with holidays in North America and elsewhere.
- Early December, or the second week of January if your schedule allows, is often calmer and better value.
- Late night and mid-morning are often quieter times for Tawaf than just after the obligatory prayers.
- Book your Rawdah visit in Madinah through Nusuk as soon as your dates are fixed, since slots can fill during busy periods.
Flights and hotels
- Flights around Christmas and New Year are among the most expensive of the year from North America. Flexible dates, or flying a few days either side of the peak, can make a real difference.

- Time difference: in December, Saudi Arabia is 8 hours ahead of Eastern Time and 11 hours ahead of Pacific Time. Allow a rest day after arrival, especially with children.

We recommend enquiring several months before a December trip. Late bookings are sometimes possible, but choice is limited.
Visa and Nusuk
US and Canadian citizens can apply online for the Saudi tourist eVisa, which allows Umrah outside the Hajj season. After you have a visa, you book your Umrah permit on Nusuk. Travelling with children
- Choose a hotel close to the mosque so children can rest between prayers.
- Agree a meeting point inside the mosque and put a card with your hotel name and phone number in each child’s pocket.
- A 10-night trip is often more comfortable with children than 7 nights, because days are less packed.

Travelling with older parents
