Makkah and Madinah Hotels for Umrah: How to Choose the Right Area and Hotel

For most pilgrims, the hotel decides how the trip feels. You walk to the mosque and back several times a day, often in crowds, so a few extra minutes each way add up quickly. This guide explains how to choose between the main hotel areas in Makkah and Madinah, what matters for families and older travellers, and what to confirm before you book from the United States or Canada.
Location first, stars second
A comfortable 3-star room close to the Haram usually serves a pilgrim better than a 5-star room far away. When you compare hotels, ask these questions before looking at the star rating:
- How long is the actual walk? Booking sites often show straight-line distance. The real route may go around buildings, through tunnels or up a hill, so ask for the walking time to the nearest gate you are likely to use.
- Is the route flat? Parts of Makkah are hilly. A walk that is easy downhill to the mosque can be tiring on the way back, especially after Isha or in the heat.
- How busy are the lifts? In large tower hotels, lifts can queue before and after prayers. A lower floor can save time.
- Can you rest between prayers? Being close enough to return to your room between Dhuhr and Asr makes a long stay far less tiring.
Makkah: the main hotel areas
Hotels in Makkah are grouped around Masjid al-Haram. The names below are the areas most pilgrims will see in package descriptions.
Abraj Al Bait (the Clock Tower complex)
The towers beneath the clock stand directly beside the mosque on its southern side. Hotels here offer the shortest walk and the option of rooms with a view of the Kaaba. They are also the most in demand, the busiest at prayer times, and usually the most expensive. For elderly parents or short trips, the saved walking time is often worth it. Jabal Omar
A newer development beside the western side of the mosque, with several large international hotels, shops and restaurants. Walks are generally short, though the area sits on sloping ground, so check the route from the specific hotel. Our group Umrah packages list a Jabal Omar hotel (Jabal Omar Hyatt Regency Makkah or similar).
Ibrahim Al Khalil Road, Ajyad and Misfalah
These older districts to the south of the mosque have a wide range of hotels, restaurants and shops at different price levels. Walking times vary much more from one hotel to the next, and some routes are uphill on the way back. They suit pilgrims on a budget or staying longer, as long as the hotel’s own route has been checked.
Aziziyah and outer districts
Further out, rooms are larger and prices lower, but you will rely on a hotel shuttle, a taxi or public transport to reach the mosque. If a package uses an outer hotel, ask whether a shuttle runs, how often, and whether it operates at every prayer time. Do not assume it does.
Madinah: staying near Masjid an-Nabawi
Madinah is simpler. Most pilgrims stay in the central area that surrounds Masjid an-Nabawi, and many hotels there are a short, flat walk from the mosque’s gates. What to check:
- Which side of the mosque the hotel faces. The mosque is very large, so the nearest gate matters. Women may want a hotel close to the entrances used for the women’s prayer areas.
- The walk to the gates you will use for your Rawdah visit, which is booked through Nusuk at a set time.
- Room views. “Haram view” rooms cost more; a standard room in the same hotel gives you the same walk.

These are the hotels stated on our package pages. All are “or similar”, which means an equivalent hotel may be offered if the named one is unavailable for your dates. We confirm the actual hotel before you book.

For 4 and 5-star packages without a named hotel, the hotel is confirmed when you enquire. Ask for the name so you can check the location yourself.
Families with children
- Room sharing: package prices are usually per person and depend on how many share a room (quad, triple or double). Ask how children are counted and whether an extra bed is possible.
- Connecting or adjacent rooms are useful for larger families but are not guaranteed; request them early.
- Stay close. Children tire quickly in crowds, and a short walk lets one parent take them back while the other stays for prayer.
- Food nearby: check what is open around the hotel late at night and early in the morning.
Elderly travellers and wheelchair users
For older pilgrims, the walk is the single most important factor. Ask:
- Is there a step-free route from the hotel entrance to the mosque?
- Does the hotel have accessible rooms and bathrooms (for example, a walk-in shower), and can one be guaranteed for your booking?
- How long are lift waits at prayer times, and is a low floor available?
- Can a wheelchair be stored in the room?

Meal plans
Packages are sold room only, with breakfast, or with more meals. Breakfast is often enough, because there are many places to eat around both mosques and prayer times shape the day. Full board can suit older travellers or families who prefer not to go out between prayers. During Ramadan, ask whether the hotel serves suhoor and iftar and whether they are included.
Getting between the airports, cities and hotels
- Arrival airport: many travellers from North America arrive at Jeddah and go to Makkah first, or arrive at Madinah and visit Madinah first. Your flight routing decides which works better.
- Transfers: private transfers are easier for families and older pilgrims; shared coach transfers are more common on group trips. Check which your package includes.
- The Haramain High Speed Railway links Makkah, Jeddah (including the airport) and Madinah. The stations are not beside the mosques, so you will still need a taxi or transfer to the hotel.
What to confirm before you book
- The exact hotel name in Makkah and in Madinah, and what “or similar” would mean for your dates.
- The walking time and route to the mosque from that hotel.
- Room type, how many people share, and bed arrangements.
- Whether the price includes taxes. Our Premium and Luxury prices exclude Saudi VAT and municipal tax.
- Which meals are included.
- Check-in and check-out times, especially if your flight arrives early or leaves late.
- Transfers between the airport, Makkah and Madinah.
- Accessibility needs, confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Kaaba-view room worth it?
It is a personal choice. The view is special, but the walk to the mosque is the same as from a standard room in the same hotel. If budget is limited, spend it on location rather than the view.
Should I stay in Makkah or Madinah first?
It usually depends on your flights. Many pilgrims from North America fly into Jeddah and perform Umrah first; others start in Madinah to rest before Umrah. Both are common.
What does “or similar” mean on a package?
It means an equivalent hotel may be used if the named one is not available. Ask for the confirmed hotel name before you pay, and check its location.
Are 3-star hotels far from the Haram?
Not necessarily. Some 3-star hotels are within walking distance, while some higher-rated hotels are further away. Always compare the walking route, not only the star rating.
