Umrah with an Istanbul Stopover: Planning Guide for USA & Canada Travelers

Istanbul is one of the most popular places to add to an Umrah trip from North America. It sits between the two halves of the journey, it has some of the finest Ottoman mosques in the world, and a few nights there can break up a long trip home. This guide covers when to stop, how long to stay, flights, entry rules, luggage and what to confirm before booking.
Why pilgrims combine Istanbul with Umrah
- It is on the way. Istanbul is a major connecting hub between North America and the Middle East, so a stopover often adds little extra flying.
- Islamic history. The Sultan Ahmed (Blue) Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Süleymaniye Mosque and the Eyüp Sultan Mosque make Istanbul a meaningful place to visit after the Haramain.
- Rest. A couple of nights between Saudi Arabia and home gives you time to recover before a long flight, especially with children or older parents.
- Family time. The Bosphorus, the bazaars and the food give everyone something to enjoy.

Most pilgrims find it easier to perform Umrah first and visit Istanbul afterwards. If you fly from Istanbul to Madinah and visit Madinah before Makkah, Ihram is not needed on that flight; you enter Ihram later, before travelling from Madinah to Makkah. If you are unsure about the rules for your route, ask a scholar you trust.
How many nights?
- 1 night: a rest stop with time for one area, such as Sultanahmet.
- 3 nights: enough for the main mosques, a Bosphorus trip and the Grand Bazaar at a comfortable pace.
- 5 nights: time for day trips and a slower pace for families.

Flight routing
- Several airlines connect North American cities with Istanbul, and Istanbul with Jeddah and Madinah. Which combination works best depends on your departure city, dates and budget, and schedules change by season.
- A multi-city ticket (for example, home to Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia to Istanbul, Istanbul to home) is usually simpler than separate one-way tickets, and protects your connections if a flight is delayed.
- Istanbul has two main airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), on the Asian side. Check which one your flights use, because transfer times to the city are very different. Our stopover transfers are from and to Istanbul Airport (IST).
- Flights to and from Istanbul are not included in our stopover prices. We can quote them with your Umrah.
Entry rules for Türkiye
- US citizens with ordinary passports do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days within 180 days, according to the Turkish Consulate General in Los Angeles. The US State Department says your passport needs at least six months’ validity beyond your arrival date and a blank page for stamps.
- Canadian citizens with ordinary passports were also exempted from the tourist visa for stays of up to 90 days in 180 days, in an announcement made in January 2024. Check Canada’s travel advice for Türkiye for the current passport requirements.
- Other passports: if you live in the US or Canada but travel on another country’s passport, your eligibility depends on that passport. Check the official Turkish e-Visa site before booking.

Our Istanbul stopovers include:

The hotel is confirmed when you book. If you would like to stay near particular sights, such as the historic peninsula around Sultanahmet, tell us and we will check what is available for your dates. Istanbul traffic can be heavy, so allow plenty of time for the airport transfer on your departure day.
Luggage and packing
- Istanbul is much colder and wetter than Makkah and Madinah in winter. Bring a warm jacket and an umbrella for a stopover between November and March.
- Pack modest clothing for mosque visits. Women will need a headscarf, and shoes are removed at the entrance.
- Keep medicines, documents and a change of clothes in your hand luggage in case a checked bag is delayed.
- If you are bringing Zamzam water home, check your airlines’ rules for every flight on your route before you travel.

Travelling with family
- Plan at least one quiet day. After Umrah, many children and older travellers are tired.
- Mosques in Istanbul close to tourists around prayer times, so plan visits between prayers, and join the prayer if you wish.
- Hills and cobbled streets in the old city are tiring. Taxis or a private driver can help older parents.

What to confirm before booking
- That your passport meets the entry rules for Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, including validity.
- Which Istanbul airport your flights use, and the flight times on both sides.
- The hotel name, its area and what the room includes.
- That the transfers match your flight times.
- The currency and final price of the stopover and the flights.
- Travel insurance that covers both countries.

Frequently asked questions
Do US and Canadian citizens need a visa for an Istanbul stopover?
Not for tourist stays of up to 90 days within 180 days on an ordinary passport, under the exemptions described above. Check the official sources before you travel, as rules can change.
Should I visit Istanbul before or after Umrah?
After Umrah is usually easier, because you avoid planning Ihram around the flight to Jeddah. Before Umrah can help you adjust to the time difference.
Are flights included in the stopover package?
No. The stopover covers the hotel, breakfast, airport transfers and on-ground assistance. We can quote flights separately.
Can we combine Istanbul with another stopover?
