Ramadan is the most sought-after time of the year for Umrah and also the busiest. If you are planning Ramadan Umrah in 2027 from the United States or Canada, the key decisions are which part of the month to travel, how early to book, and how to handle permits and crowds. This guide covers each one.

These dates are tentative (timeanddate.com). The start and end of Ramadan are confirmed by moon sighting and can shift by a day, so build a little flexibility into your plans, especially around Eid.
Why Ramadan Umrah is in such high demand
A widely reported hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim describes Umrah in Ramadan as equal in reward to Hajj, and many Muslims hope to spend the last ten nights, when Laylat al-Qadr is sought, in the Haramain. The result is that hotels near Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi fill early, flights cost more, and both mosques are at their most crowded, especially in the final ten nights.

When to book
- Now to November 2026: the best choice of hotels near the Haram, especially for the last ten nights.
- December 2026 to January 2027: still possible, but fewer rooms and higher prices; be flexible on dates or hotel.
- Visa and Nusuk: apply for your visa once your flights and hotels are set, then book your Umrah permit on Nusuk as soon as your dates are confirmed.
- Vaccination: the quadrivalent (ACYW) meningococcal vaccine must be given at least 10 days before you arrive (CDC).
Permits and the Rawdah in Ramadan
You need an Umrah permit from Nusuk in addition to your visa. In recent Ramadans the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has limited how often each person can perform Umrah; in 2023, for example, it announced that each pilgrim could perform Umrah once during Ramadan (official announcement). Check the rule announced for Ramadan 2027 before you plan more than one Umrah.
Visits to the Rawdah in Masjid an-Nabawi are also booked on Nusuk, and slots are scarce in Ramadan. If you are going to Madinah, check the app regularly once your dates are fixed.
Makkah first or Madinah first?
Many pilgrims spend the last ten nights in Makkah, which means visiting Madinah earlier in the month. Others prefer Madinah for the last nights because it can feel calmer. Either works; what matters is booking hotels for the part of the month you want in each city, because the last ten nights book up first in both.
Fasting, heat and pacing
- February and early March are among the milder months in Makkah and Madinah, which makes fasting easier than in summer.
- Many pilgrims perform Umrah after iftar or in the early hours, when it is cooler and the fast is broken.
- Drink enough water between iftar and suhoor, and rest during the day if you are praying late at night.
- If you have a medical condition, ask your doctor about fasting while travelling. Religious rules on fasting while travelling differ, so ask a scholar you trust.
Travelling with family or elderly parents
